Greenesfield works were the former North Eastern Railway Locomotive works, a huge complex on the banks of the River Tyne, looking from the Newcastle side like fortifications.
This picture was taken towards the western end, called Rabbit Banks, near where the present Metro Bridge comes out of the tunnel. You can see the trees have been newly planted - it would be interesting to see a picture from this location now. As far as I can remember this predates any of the public art in Gateshead, including those on the river banks.
