Back in November of last year in a post called "One dimensional politics" I touched on the poor utility of the Left:Right categorisation in politics. The topic has come up again on Samizdata.net. So far no one seems any clearer about the answer than I was then (or now - which is why the promised further post never materialised).
I was intending to look at the issue from the perpective of Personal Construct Theory and the Reportory Grid, which still seems to be a useful approach. However that will have to wait as I have other things on my mind.
